With today marking the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, Jo-Ann Fabrics wanted to share a few tips, tools and trends to help crafter in their quest to go green.
Here are a few ways to incorporate earth-friendly practices into your next project:
• Refresh a group of vintage-look frames with a quick coat of paint to create a chic antique frame gallery transforming any wall from blah to brilliant
• Sew a market bag and use it as an environmentally-friendly alternative to the plastic shopping bag
• ‘Upcycle‘ that former favorite skirt or shirt into a fashion-forward scarf – it’s a sensible solution that makes use of something you simply can’t give up
• Choose recycled paper for your next paper crafting project
• Repurpose an ordinary shadowbox frame by adding purse handles, fabric and other crafting supplies, then use it as a stylish serving tray
• Select yarns made from natural fibers such as bamboo and alpaca for your next knit or crochet project In addition, you can support the environment by choosing to shop for handmade goods.
Jo-Ann proudly supports Artfire.com as a Common Good partner, to promote the success of independent artists and crafters. Many of these eco-friendly artisans craft with intentions to protect the environment.

I have been recycling for quite a few years – before it became fashionable. Now I am trying to cut back on plastic bags from the grocery store…I do re-use the ones I take but I know I can do better.
I reuse plastic and glass containers, then recycle them. We sort out recyclables always. Where available, we’ve opted for email billing and payment, as well as online magazines vs. mailed. I have a few small bags I use at the supermarket; they fold up and fit right in your purse easily.
I’ve been green ever since I was a teenager! Why be part of the problem, when you can be part of the solution?

I use recycled bags all the time.
I had a recycle center where I keep all my glass jars, tin cans, pop cans, and papers all sorted so they are ready to take to the recycling center in town.
I have commited to using reusable shopping bags….

I invested in stainless steel water bottles instead of buying bottled water.
I make sure we recycle everything we possibly can
I switched out all the lights in our house to CFL blubs and I’ve already noticed a difference in our electric bills.
I steam clean my hard surface floors.
I unplug appliances when not in use. They still use electricity even when not on. I have already noticed a difference in my electric bill, and I am conserving energy.

We became a one vehicle family.
I AM CLEANING WITH BAKING SODA AND VINEGAR
I recycle plastic. I also try not to throw items in the trash. I try to either donate them to Goodwill/Salvation Army or upcycle or repurpose them. My craft room overflows! I get tons of ideas online about what to do with everything from clothing to soda can tabs.

I take buses and seabus or walk instead of driving alot! It’s spring, and the weather is nice, so I enjoy it.
We have recycled for a long time, but recently we’ve began replacing disposable items (paper towels, napkins, etc) with reusable items. Thanks.
I’ve started growing my own vegetable garden, and am also using less electricity and water.
I posted about the giveaway on Facebook. Winsomethingalready Terri
I have started using organic cleaning products in my home instead of chemical products.
I use recyclable bags, started small herb & veg garden, shorter showers, unplug small appliances, never let water run & become one car family. Next, we will replace lightbulbs

i have started to commute to work with my mother, carpooling!
I am slowly but surely replacing all my lightbulbs with CFLs, I plug my appliances into a power strip that gets flipped off as soon as I’m done using the appliance, and I try to use Vinegar as my cleaning agent in as many venues as possible. I try to be as practically green as possible – sometimes “green” is more expensive, but when it’s feasible for me, I do my part. Next is getting a bike to ride instead of driving as much.

I use my reusable bags 100% of the time – even if it means going back to the car to get them. Oh yes, I keep them in the front seat of the car and still forget them on a regular basis.

I have been using reusueable bags now a lot lately. I always make sure I have a stack of them in my car now. I find them a lot more reliable and easier to unload my groceries. I also use them for my crochet and craft projects.I also keep a small one for my coupons that i collect and store them in there untill I cut them.I also have some big ones for storing winter hats and gloves.
We’re doing the “little” things that add up, like reusable bags (for groceries and mall shopping), most laundry in cold water, energy efficient lightbulbs and recycling.
