Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes DVD Review

I’ve always loved the classic cartoons: slapstick humor, whimsical art, and fun sounds. When I read the synopsis for Tom and Jerry Meet Sherlock Holmes, I was really excited to watch this movie.

Jewel heists around the city of London befuddle Scotland Yard and the beautiful singer Red is framed for the crook. Only the legendary Sherlock Holmes can find the real thief with the help of his assistant Dr. Watson–and of course, Tom and Jerry. But finding clues and cracking the case will be elementary compared to keeping the peace between these raucous rivals as they scamper, scurry, scoot and speed along the streets, alleys and rooftops in the name of justice. Familiar friends Tuffy, Butch, Droopy and many more cleverly round out the motley crew of characters and possible suspects in this brilliant fusion of classic detection and energetic animation!

At the beginning of the movie, it was everything I had anticipated. The animation was wonderful! The artist retained the classic look of Tom and Jerry while making the backgrounds incredibly detailed and captivating. The movie also retained the usual slapstick antics of the cat and mouse team as well as the adorable sounds that accompany such rowdiness.

I loved that the cartoon incorporated some classic elements of Sherlock Holmes as well. The setting was perfectly situated for the timeless detective including places like the Rathbone Inn, the Bruce Nigel Music Hall, and the Tower of London. The characters from Doyle’s original tales of Sherlock Holmes also join the action. We see the faithful companion, Dr. Watson as well as Holme’s arch enemy, Moriarity.

I was sure this would be a movie that I would love to share with my children as well as my nephew’s and nieces. Unfortunately, as I continued to watch the movie, I was extremely disappointed in some of the content. The beautiful singer, Red, who is unfortunately framed for the jewel thefts, is first introduced on stage at the equivalent of a night club. She is in skimpy clothing being ogled and whistled at by drinking “gentlemen” as she does a song and dance routine with an umbrella.

A few minutes later, we see her in her dressing room changing behind a screen as she is interviewed by Holmes and his crew. The men are openly staring with drunken looks on their faces. It made my stomach churn as I watched. This is definitely not something I would want my children seeing or emulating.

Red was a main character throughout the movie and continued to wear a low cut dress that showed cleavage. I understand this is just a cartoon, but I firmly believe that something that is inappropriate in real life is also inappropriate in a cartoon.

There was one more scene where, once again, Red is singing and dancing on stage with her skimpy attire, umbrella, and ogling men. This time the scene is in a pub with beer and gambling taking place.

I think the thing that makes me the most sad about this movie is the fact that it’s geared for children. It’s not a movie that would interest adults in any way. If I had only viewed the first 5 minutes of this movie, I would have thought it would have been a great movie to let the kids watch by themselves as I did my housework.

Well-written review. Thanks for the insight on the movie. It is a shame that movie directors feel the need to incorporate sexuality into children’s movies. The intended audience is probably for those ages 2-6. Is that the age that children need to start losing their innocence?

But—but—the original Tom and Jerry cartoons were made for adults as well as kids, and Red appeared in those, too, with Tex Avery showing various Big Bad Wolf characters howling at her sexy performances.
I’m not saying it’s definitely appropriate for the youngest kids; but it’s definitely something that older Tom and Jerry viewers expected to see.

Since my husband is a huge Sherlock Holmes fan and grew up with Tom and Jerry he would enjoy watching this with the grandchildren.
